25.10.-23.11.2024 / Opening, Friday October 25th, 2024, at 7:30 pm
A Nordic hommage to the Situationist International movement.
A show with a lot of humour, surrealism and criticism towards market values, authority, capitalist society as a for of total alienation.
TORGGATA BLAD (Norway)is an odd and piercing voice in the chorus of Norwegian magazine publications. The magazine is run by a creative collective consisting of artists, academics, activists, and other enthusiasts. Their goal is to critique power, often through satire and other empowering strategies, as well as to highlight voices, forms of expression, and viewpoints that do not easily find their way into the Norwegian mainstream media.Torggata Blad also undertakes other types of projects, including cabarets, workshops, direct actions, and campaigns – such as our first aid kit against neoliberalism. Torggata Blad collaborate with other groups and organizations, including Subvertising Norway, Norwegian Tenants’ Association, Museum of Care, and Sagene Sustainability Workshop.
THOMAS COSTA FRETÉ (b. Rogerstam) often highlight the comedy side of dark subjects with his quirky and slightly surrealistic work. He runs a company called Vurpa which translates to fall or overturn and is a hommage to the art of falling and getting back up again. Rock bottom is another word for springboard.
SARA GRANÉR (Sweden)has her artistic base in comics and satire. Her distinctive mythical creatures try to tackle the absurdities of existence in an artistic universe that draws inspiration from underground comics, art brut, surrealism, and naivism. Granér’s latest book, Den sjunde vännen, was published in 2022. In the book, the stories move in and out of the body, out into the quiet cosmos, and back to the first mammals, to a time before language. We encounter collapsed civilizations, the prison industry, archaeological excavations, and the experience of being completely alone in one’s species. Granér is diversely inspired by philosophy, history, religion, politics, and language. Her works often open up to the absurd, dark, and suggestive, while also highlighting the humorous and beautiful aspects of people and the world. The images and comics are often humorous but also allow for melancholy and sorrow. Granér balances on the edge between the beautiful and the ugly, the wise and the foolish.
CHARLOTTE RODENSTEDT is an artist, animator, producer, sculptor, game developer, scenographer, video editor, Olympic gymnast, ceramicist, crocheter, photographer and businesswoman (only one of these things isn’t true). Her work is an exploration of the absurd lurking in the everyday. From stuffed toys drowning in stoves to oral dishwashers and fridges stocked with feet, eyes, and livestock, her linocuts and sculptures turn the familiar into something delightfully unsettling. The exhibition gives you a taste of Charlotte’s various fascinations. She uses diverse approaches and media in her linocuts, ceramics and film, but they’re always underpinned with humour, brightness and sharp observation.
SUBVERTISING WORKSHOP
Torggata Blad presents Subvertising Norway by artist and activist HANNE UGELSTAD.
Thursday October 24th, 2024, 6:00 pm at KREISGalerie, Nürnberg
“The spectacle is not a collection of images, but a social relation among people, mediated by images” – Society of the Spectacle, Guy Debord, 1967
Subvertising, a portmanteau of ´subvert´ and ´advertising´, is a form of civil disobedience that replaces advertising with art. The work is guided by the basic principle that the visual realm in public space belongs to everyone; no one should be able to own it. Public space should be a forum for dialogue, debate and exchange of ideas. Everyone should be free to participate in this, not only companies and organisations that can afford to steal our attention.
In this workshop led by Hanne Ugelstad from Subvertising Norway, you’ll learn about the background behind the protest art movement subvertising, as well as receive practical instruction and advice for subvertising actions.
We’ll give a talk about this form of activism, and the collective Subvertising Norway. After the talk, the practical workshop begins, where the participants are invited to create their own posters and artworks if they want, and continue the conversation.
About:
Subvertising Norway is a not-for-profit collective of artists, activists and designers, dedicated to questioning who has the power and authority to communicate and create meaning in public space, by acts of creative subversion and art-based activism.
We believe stories are the fundamental organising force in society, and the narrative created by outdoor advertisers needs to be challenged. Through our actions, we create a ‘glitch´ in reality illustrating an alternative vision for the use of our shared public spaces. We hope that by acting as though we already exist in that future, and by sharing that vision with the widest possible audience, we help create it.
